Here’s a problem we have encountered a lot. So many hotels — especially ones catering to “the love market” — make a big deal of being adults-only. Which sounds fantastic if that is what you’re searching for: some quiet down-time from the pool which doesn’t demand repeated splashing or calls for “Marco!” “Polo!”

But in the past two weeks we’ve come across three famous areas that encourage their “adults-only” standing, and in fact, aren’t adults-only — or at least are not in the manner most honeymooners think of it. Some adults-only resorts believe adults to be more or anybody 12. Or age 16 and above. Or are during particular times of the year, and exclude summer or holidays — you know, those days of year when  children are out of college and want to splash around resort pools.

Last time I checked, a 12-year-old was not an adult.

And don’t get me wrong; children are loved by me. In reality, I plan to devote much of the summer poolside along with my favorite 5-year-old, splashing anybody who gets close us and probably playing some games of Marco Polo.

However, if I were planning a romantic escape and likely paying extra to enjoy any adult-only time, I’d be disappointed to learn that kids can be meant by adults.

The morale of this story: Read the fine print, and if they don’t record it, then ask. Or work with someone who understands the scoop.
